Last year, for one of our NewRestaurantTuesday excursions, we tried Sus Hi Eatstation in Orlando near UCF. We found it to be a delightful little place that offers a new take on sushi. In addition to traditional rolls, they serve sushi bowls, burritos, and inventive side menu options. They recently opened a location close to us in Winter Springs, so we were super excited to try it out again - especially when we found a deal that fit nicely into our CheapEatsWednesday theme!

The Deal

This restaurant seems to focus on self-serve ordering options, allowing the staff to focus on creating quality meals. As part of that initiative, they are offering 50% off one item ordered through the app. This offer pops up as soon as you go to the website, prompting users to enter their email address to create an account and download the app. Therefore, my husband and I each created an account and downloaded the app. That way both of us could get our meals for 50% off. We did this from the parking lot of the restaurant, then went into the restaurant to wait for (and eat) our meals. We found the process of signing up, ordering, and paying for our meal to be simple and straightforward. Though, if you put more than one item on the order, it seems to pick the cheapest item to apply the 50% discount on. Because of that, we each ordered our meals with the discount, then submitted the cheaper items separately. Still, what a deal!!

Each order from the app or in person will accumulate points that can be used for additional deals, such as free egg rolls (600 points), free create your own handroll (1000 points), free create your own burrito (2500 points), etc. There are also other deals that the restaurant is offering via coupon, which I found inside the store. They seem to be good until 12/31/2023, so we can get cheap eats all year!

The Digs

The dining area of the Winter Springs location is not very big - it has a few tables to accommodate those who wish to dine-in. There is a screen at the counter for another self-serve ordering option (I believe this is what we used for our UCF location visit), though you won't get the 50% off deal if you use this option. There is also staff to take your order if the self-serve option isn't for you. The dining area was clean and pleasantly lit. There were high top tables as well as regular height tables.

The Service

We found the staff to be pleasant and accommodating. When we entered, we were immediately greeted. We told them we were just waiting on the online order and that we would be dining in. Once the order was ready, it was delivered to our table by a staff member. When I had a concern, it was promptly addressed without an issue. The only recommendation I would give is to ensure the dining area tables are wiped off in a timely manner, as one of the tables sat dirty for our entire stay. Overall, we found the service to be quick and friendly.

The Tastebud Delights

There are so many options to choose from when it comes to menu items. There are preselected combinations of rice, protein, and toppings, in form of bowl, burrito or roll. In addition, there is a make your own section where you can be as creative as you like! They also offer munchies and desserts. The menu clearly designates items that are raw vs cooked, spicy, gluten free, and vegan. For this visit, we chose a burrito, a bowl, and sushi tots.

I ordered the Crazy Rich Salmon Bowl, and they aren't kidding - It was crazy rich!! I'd say almost too rich. I could not eat but half the bowl before I was full. This dish comes with white rice, cream cheese, cucumbers, scallions, edamame, tempura flakes, purple cabbage, nori seasoning, avocado, spicy mayo, sweet teriyaki, and (of course) salmon (raw). The sauce combination was almost overpowering. It was very good, but I could have done with a little less sauce so that I could get more of the salmon flavor in there. The bonus was that I got to eat the other half for lunch the next day, and it was just as tasty (and just as rich). I will save this one for a special treat, as it's not something I could eat every day.

My husband had the Salmon Slayer Burrito. This is no small burrito - my husband was very full after eating it. This burrito comes packed with white rice, fire salmon (raw), cucumber, scallions, purple cabbage, avocado, wonton noodles, tempura flakes, spicy mayo, and sweet soy sauce. It was full of flavor and was the best item that we ordered on this visit. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal. I have ordered one of their burritos in a past visit, and this will be my go-to for future visits.

After we submitted our 50% off orders, we decided we wanted another menu item - so ordered the Loaded Rice Tots. We ordered this one separately, as it was our cheaper item. These tots aren't taters. Instead, they are made of rice and nori, and are topped with cheese, bacon, spicy krab, spicy mayo, scallions, and sesame seeds. We got this the last time we went and LOVED them! However, this go-around, we were very disappointed, as we couldn't quite stomach them. There was a burnt flavor and smell that led us to believe the tots had been cooked too long. We brought this to the attention of the staff, and they offered to make us another one. Unfortunately, the second batch had the same problem. Upon inspecting the tots, they did not look burnt, and the taste seemed to be stronger on the top tots than the bottom tots. We did not want to complain again, as they did offer the second batch, so just took them home. I tried them again the next day, and the burnt taste was less, but still there. I'm not sure if this was a problem with the oil, or perhaps it came from one of the toppings. We weren't able to determine exactly what was causing the taste and smell, but we won't be ordering these again.

The Takeaway

Though we did not enjoy this visit as much as our first visit, the food that we did like is definitely worth returning for! I love that it's quick, making it a great grab and go option. The ability to order from the app is easy, as is the counter screen. The technology involved in the ordering process is impressively well designed. The service is good, the food is unique, and there is flexibility to get exactly what you want. So far, my favorite item is the make your own burrito, which I have ordered on a previous visit. The portion sizes are large, and there are many discount options available, making any meal here a great value. Though there are some opportunities for improvement, I very much look forward to returning. I love the unique take on sushi that this restaurant offers and recommend our readers to try it out.

(As a final note, I probably should put some kind of disclaimer about consuming raw fish/meat being a risk to foodborne illnesses and such. Consider yourself warned.)
